Somehow, I’ve ended up at a nice little place in Ocean View called Bougainvillea Bed and Breakfast. It’s an odd story…
About 4 weeks ago I met a farmer at a Starbucks in Hilo who told me about her farm in Pahoa. She was a great new agey type who preferred a no drug environment. I made plans to go see her farm, but week after week things didn’t work out either on my end or hers. A couple weeks ago she informed me that she had acquired a second farm in Ocean View and asked if I’d be willing to visit her there. I agreed even though it would mean 4 hours on the bus and half a day in Hilo waiting for the connecting bus. I figured I’d be seeing a new part of the island and many different types of ecosystems along the way.
We set things up for me to come out yesterday and I was able to catch all my buses and get down to Ocean View as planned. Only problem was she wasn’t at the park and ride to pick me up. I had tried to text and call a few times during the day, but since reception can be spotty all over the island I didn’t think too much of it. Obviously I was feeling a bit stressed being at a new far place on my own. I went immediately to the nearby store to ask about camping and hotels. I got a phone number and called to let the b&b know I might be coming. I waited another 30 min for the farmer and then went over. Yah it’s way more expensive than I planned (camping would have been free) but for the stress I figured whynot just enjoy myself here. The landscape here is lava rock so it quite impossible to find flat terrain to pitch a tent anyways.
So here I am at this cute little b&b enjoying myself. They have a collection of video tapes and a VCR in every room. Finaly saw Sense and Sensibility. There’s a pool and a great view of the ocean. The owners are great and they have a couple visiting them from Walnut Creek. The whole group is over 70 years old and all originally from Seattle. (For those that don’t know I’m from Seattle and lived in Walnut Creek for a year.) It’s a great change of pace to get the perspectives of older folk and what it’s like to be a grandparent. Really great honestly.
FYI, I got my battery and everything set up so when I get back home I’ll have power. Also got my Hawaii license and library card! Woohoo :)
